Pros and Cons of Driving
After driving many miles recently (150+) I have thought about how much of a love-hate relationship I have with driving. And I decided to go over the pros and cons, in a nice, orderly list. Maybe I can scare some of you into never driving!
Pros
- You are in control of your transportation. You get to decide when you come and go and how long it takes.
- It is pretty much your only mode of transportation when you live in a rural area, like I do.
- You get to jam out and do American Idol in your car when you’re alone.
So, yeah, those are the pros. They are very big pros! But that’s about it. Now the cons!
Cons
- Gas is expensive.
- Car insurance is expensive.
- There are a lot of laws that you can break. So, lots of chances for tickets, which means more money.
- That whole global warming thing. Glenn Beck tells me it’s not real, though, so I guess it’s not big deal.
- Driving is scary. You are in a heavy object, traveling at high speeds. If that wasn’t enough, there’s other drivers, animals, pedestrians, inanimate objects, unexpected events, your car might explode, etc.
- If there is a problem with your car, it is expensive to fix (usually).
- If you are like me, you run the risk of hitting an old lady on a bicycle.
- Other drivers are assholes – at least in New Jersey. Everything you might have ever heard about New Jersey drivers ever is all true.
Yes. Driving is scary and dangerous and expensive. But pretty much a necessity if you don’t live in a more metropolitan area. And I’m not exaggerating; the nearest bus stop to my house is more than 5 miles away.
So have fun driving everybody!
Hello, my name's Josh and I might be a hipster (you decide!). I've been blogging and designing in some form for the past eight or so years and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it (once again, you decide!). I love indie music, coming of age stories, sarcasm, video games, and aesthetics. At the moment I'm working part-time and going to college with hopes of being a web designer.

It’s called cycling ;) It’s much easier than driving and it gives you great exercise!
Reply: Maybe you missed the part where I said it’s inconvenient not to drive? :P The bus stop is 5 miles away. Everything else is 10 or more. Not to mention I would be cycling on major highways or roads with no room for cyclists.

I don’t drive when I’m away at school (there’s excellent public transportation) but I drive when I’m at home. I like driving, it’s pretty mindless and fairly simple. I just don’t like driving with other people on the road, because 99% of the drivers I share the road with are stupid and/or reckless drivers!

Ahh, i drive all the time, virtually everywhere. The only play I don’t to is uni (except today and yesterday), and even then I have to drive to the ferry to get into town. Cos parking is ridiculously expensive. And about getting tickets… hell yeah, those are a killer. I’ve had 3x tickets… two were $80, one was $150. And they were veeeery minor infringements, all with circumstantial reasons, but the speed camera isnt going to care that you went 2kph over the leeway just to avoid getting hit by the truck behind you cos its a steep hill… >< and don't even get me started on arsehole drivers – today a woman almost ran into me just because she didnt look whilst reversing?!!! srsly.

I want to learn to drive eventually, but I’m not in a hurry. It IS really scary! I live 2 minutes away from a main-ish bus station, so public transportation is an easy choice for me :)

New Jersey drivers are the ABSOLUTE WORST. I’m excited to drive, but I want to learn somewhere else. My parents usually get pissed off while driving just because we live in New Jersey and you can’t do anything (like make a left-hand turn) and the drivers suck.
Reply: Yes, it sucks driving here. Driving on major highways is the worst. The Parkway is probably the worst thing ever.
